Program Description:

The Educational Leadership Program at the University of New Mexico provides a rigorous and relevant program of study that prepares students for leading P-12, higher education and/or non-profit educational organizations.  The program develops leaders for learning in a diverse world.  Students engage in coursework and administrative internship experiences, which are grounded in transformational leadership practice, learner-centered strategies, contextual models, reflective opportunities and culturally responsive actions.  The program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The Post Masters Education Specialist Certificate in Educational Leadership (Ed.S) is a fully online 24 credit hour program that includes 6 credits of either a practicum or an administrative internship.  Applicants for the Education Specialist Certificate who seek administrative licensure must hold a valid Level III A New Mexico Teaching License at the time they intend to participate in the administrative internship and must show evidence of having the appropriate qualifications for advancing their careers as school leaders in public education settings.  Coursework, practicum and administrative internship experiences are aligned to the Interstate School Leaders Consortium (ISSLC) Standards and to state administrator competencies.  

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership or a complimentary field and meet the requirements set forth in the College section of the UNM catalog and in the sections on graduate studies at the University of New Mexico.  Applicants for the Education Specialist Certificate in Educational Leadership are required to have a 3.0 GPA in their Master's level work.  Application materials include application to the UNM Graduate School and to the Educational Leadership Program.  Formal admission to graduate status must occur prior to, or concurrently with, admission to the Educational Leadership Program.  In addition to the UNM Graduate School application requirements, program applications include:

  • A Letter of Intent
  • Original Writing Sample (Essay)
  • Official Transcripts
  • Three Letter of Recommendation Forms
  • Professional Biographical Form

Program faculty review each file individually for determination of program admission status.

Career Opportunities:

The Post-Masters Education Specialist Certificate in Educational Leadership program prepares students to be eligible to apply for state administrative licensure, which is necessary for pursuing careers as a school principal or a school leader in other capacities that require New Mexico Administrative Licensure.
